December has arrived to cap off an excellent year in video games. We've sen some truly excellent games in 2017, even during the slower summer months, so there is much to enjoy if you missed out earlier this year. December is a light month, comparatively, but there are still a handful of solid games you'll want to grab before year's end.
Games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild$59.99 at Amazonand Super Mario Odyssey$59.88 at Amazon dominated this year, but there were plenty of other gems worth buying: action RPGs like Nioh, and Nier: Automata, survival horror The Evil Within 2, and the run-and-gun Cuphead, among many others.
This month, the Nintendo Switch gets the much-awaited Xenoblade Chronicles 2, giving RPG fans a spectacular and sprawling game world to explore, a new cast of characters to develop, and the unique portability that only the Switch provides. If you want a game that is easier to jump into and play, Gang Beasts hits the PlayStation 4 this month, and delivers silly party-game fighting action for you to enjoy with friends.
Of course, there are more RPGs, action games, and platformers to look forward to this month, so read on to learn more. Stop by the comment section to let us know what you're anticipating in 2018. Personally, I'm awaiting Monster Hunter World with baited breath.

  • 1Gang Beasts

    Platforms: PlayStation 4
    Release Date: December 12, 2017
    MSRP: TBD
Gang Beasts drops the technical one-on-one experience you expect from a fighting game and instead gives you a silly multi-player brawler set across a wide variety of dangerous stages. Your gelatinous hero must punch and kick his opponents to submission, then seal the deal by tossing them out of bounds or into any number of hazards. If you're itching for a kooky party fighter, Gang Beasts has what you're looking for.
  • 2Xenoblade Chronicles 2

    Platforms: Nintendo Switch
    Release Date: December 1, 2017
    MSRP: $59.99
Xenoblade Chronicles was a sprawling RPG set in a highly detailed world, made all the more impressive by the fact that it was a Wii exclusive title. Chronicles 2 delivers more action RPG goodness, with a brand new cast of playable characters, improved action combat mechanics, and a massive new world to explore. A must-buy for Nintendo Switch owners.
  • 3Tokyu Xanadu eX+

    Platforms: PC, PS4
    Release Date: December 8, 2017
    MSRP: $59.99
Though it shares some common themes with the Xanadu dungeon crawling series, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a party-based game with a greater emphasis on party interaction, and is set within a modern-day, Tokyo-esque suburb. You still expect Xanadu's dungeon crawling gameplay, though this iteration twists the formula by giving you modern labyrinths to explore with your crew.
  • 4Okami HD

    Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4
    Release Date: December 12, 2017

In Okami you assume the role of Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun in wolf form. Faith in the Gods has weakened, evil is afoot, and only Amaterasu can set things right and restore the world. Okami is an exploration-heavy action game, and shares many common gameplay elements with the Zelda series. The realm of Nippon is filled with quests to undertake and secrets to find, and Okami's lengthy story will keep you playing well into the New Year.
  • 5The End is Nigh

    Platforms: Nintendo Switch
    Release Date: December 12, 2017

The End Is Nigh is considered a spiritual successor to Super Meat Boy, and was co-created by one of Super Meat Boy's developers. However, it is more clearly inspired by games like Spelunky and 1001 Spikes. In any case, if platforming is your cup of tea, The End Is Nigh has just what you're looking for. You play as Ash, a hopping black blob, and must complete hundreds of single-screen platforming challenges to get to your goal.
